Essential Guitar Blogs

Guitars crop up in the strangest of places!

There’s a lot guitar info out there on the web, both good and bad and these days I find that I’m getting the lions share of my daily guitar fix from a selected few blogs so I thought I’d start a list, kicking it off with some of my personal favorites!

http://5th-fret.blogspot.com/ – Extremely well written blog covering a broad range of guitar info

http://www.iheartguitarblog.com/ – Great gear reviews

http://guitarkadia.com/ – Particularly good artist interviews – check out the Videos section

http://sixstringlounge.com/ – Guitar talk, tips and news by Mark Lee of Third Day

http://www.guitartoybox.com/ – Always interesting eclectic mix of artist and gear news

http://guitarcollecting.co.uk/ – Great collectors site, feast your eyes on some of the rarest guitars around

http://www.guitarfixation.com/ – Gear oriented blog with great in depth maker interviews

http://www.guitarlifestyle.com/ – Gear and artist news – always has great videos I haven’t seen before

http://www.guitarnoize.com/ – More gear and artist news – well written and always entertaining

http://guitarplayerdaily.blogspot.com/ – News and reviews – has some great info on learning

I’ll be adding to this list as I come across more that I like, I should stress that this is a personal list, there are are of course many more blogs out there that have huge readerships in comparison to these. If you are blogging about guitars yourself or have personal favs you’d like to point us towards to check out do let us know… all additions to the above list will be most welcome!

Good gifts for guitarists?

Well the seasonal dust is settling and most of us guitar nuts will have had the good fortune to receive at least one guitar themed present. With guitar obsessed friends myself I know how hard it can be to find a gift that is either original or useful. My personal favorite gift to give is a Red Bear Trading Co. pick, these little beauties are somewhat on the pricey side for a pick but really are unparalleled in quality!

Small but perfectly formed!

Has anyone else got a togo guitar gift or did anyone get something really great this year that the rest of us might be interested to see/envy?

Leslie West in his own words at last!

Over at Fret 12 they’ve released an in-depth interview and retrospective on DVD of guitar legend Leslie West.

I had the great pleasure of seeing Mountain live many moons ago supporting Deep Purple at Knebworth and apart from the rain and a particularly unhealthy binge on doughnuts my main memory from that day is hearing the legendary “Nantucket Sleighride”  at serious decibels (anyone growing up in the UK in the 70′s will remember this monster track as the intro and outro music to the politics show “Weekend World” on ITV which aired just before “The Big Match” every Sunday …) I know what’s top of my Christmas list this year!

Some great guitars have beed added to dbTwang in the last days, here are a couple that catch the eye. You need to be a registered free user to see the full profile of each guitar.

Gibson SG Diablo 2008

Gibson SG Diablo, original limited run in Diablo Red

9 great shots of this guitar from Gibson’s Guitar of the Month Program. While the origins of that program maybe firmly rooted in their marketing department it has seen a number of outstanding guitars emerge.

Tanglewood TW170-AS-CE 2007

Tanglewood TW170-AS-CE 2007

Grand Auditorium Body with Solid Spruce Top and Solid Mahogany Back and Sides

This comes from the British manufacturer Tanglewood – which was ranked as the best selling acoustic guitar brand by the UK mag Mi Pro. They also make a range under licence from Michael Sanden – the Swedish Luthier.

Paul Reed Smith Singlecut 245

Paul Reed Smith Singlecut 245 2008

2008 Paul Read Smith SC245 in a superb Mateo Blue

The subject of a long running legal battle between Gibson and PRS that saw PRS retain the right to make this great guitar despite its similarity in profile to the Les Paul. This looks like a super example of this great guitar with a stunning “10 Top”.

The World’s Greatest Living Guitarists?

A couple of us in dbTwang were having a discussion on Friday about the worlds greatest living guitarists and this is the list we started with.

It is open to debate in a lot of areas, especially as you start to narrow in on the individual genres and we welcome your input to it. It does have a purpose for us beyond just being a theoretical list and that will be revealed in time. In each case I have linked to the individuals official site where it exists and to their Wikipedia entry.

UPDATE: We will be using this list as the basis for running a poll in the New Year so please feel free to continue to contribute names for it.

UPDATE @21 Dec 2009, 23rd Dec, 1st Jan 2010

Going to include here suggestions from the comments – including Fintan’s.

Gibson’s Dusk Tiger

Would you pay $4k for a self tuning guitar? Gibson think you might and Wired Mag gave their first foray into Robotic guitars (the Dusk Tiger official site is here) a kinda thumbs up.

Here is the Wired video review featuring Keith Axline from the Domestic Electrics (ignore the advert for about 12 secs at the beginning)

What do you think of it? And when we will we see the first one of these on dbTwang, there are only 1,000 being made so they will be a collectors item.

Dublin luthier John Moriarty and a 1960′s Gretsch Chet Atkins repair

We came across John’s site today and Fintan was impressed with John’s approach to the repair and set-up of his instruments.

In this clip he shares a 3 month repair job on a 1960′s Gretsch Chet Atkins.
